Why Should We Care About the European Middle Ages?
The European Medieval Period, 500-1500AD, is often dismissed as ‘the Dark Ages'. Record keeping was mostly poor and partial, travel and trade operated on a small scale, and theology dominated all academicdiscourse. Yet for all this, the Middle Ages were a time of exuberantcreativity, breathtaking invention, and radical intellectual and politicalchange. Taking a broad historical view, this lecture will explore some of the key medieval institutions that have come to shape modernity. Focusing inparticular on the intellectual and cultural origins of the University, I will argue that appreciating the medieval context can give us some radical andunexpected insights moving into the future.
